To start the ocean inquiry, we used a mind-map approach to write down new knowledge we learned. Each student had their own idea posted on the web.
The students took their new found enjoyment of ocean learning and used it to write new vocabulary.
There were many spontaneous learning activities once the students were engaged with the learning. This was one of my students making a hammer head shark to share.
One of the tangents we went on was learning about schools of fish. The students were finding pictures of them in lots of books. We used oil pastels and water colour to make our own schools of fish in the ocean.
In this science based experiment, the students learned about the 5 zones of the ocean. Using different buoyancies of liquids, we layered the ocean zones while naming them.
One of my students was working beyond Kindergarten level, but was very interested in the ocean inquiry. To sustain his learning, we gave him his own ocean fact book to use during activity time.
